[Panic] The word panic comes from the Greek god Pan, who lived in a forest. Pan often hid behind the trees in a dark corner and waited for a traveler to pass. When a traveler passed by him, Pan shook the trees to frighten the traveler. If the traveler got frightened and started to walk fast, Pan moved to the next dark corner and waited for him again. There, he shook more trees, and this made the traveler more frightened. This is how the word panic got its meaning of "get frightened." [Paparazzo] The word paparazzo comes from Paparazzo, the last name of a photographer in the Italian movie La Dolce Vita. In the movie, Paparazzo sells his pictures of stars to newspapers. In the 1960s, the word paparazzo entered English as a word for an annoying photographer who follows stars. As more and more people have become interested in stars' private lives, paparazzi, the plural form of paparazzo, is now an everyday word around the world. |
