1211H3-28::To describe what happens to common resources as a result of human greed, Garrett Hardin used the example of an area of pasture on which all the cattle-owners are permitted to graze their animals free of charge. Each cattle-owner seeks to maximize his gain and in doing so considers the relative advantage and disadvantage of adding one more animal to the herd. The advantage is that the cattle-owner receives the whole of the profit from the sale of the additional animal. The disadvantage is that the extra grazing contributes to the deterioration of the pasture. However, the disadvantage is shared among all the cattle-owners using the pasture, so the individual owner suffers only a fraction of the disadvantage. Consequently, the advantage is bound to exceed the disadvantage. Thus, it is inevitable that more and more animals will be brought onto the pasture until overgrazing totally destroys the pasture.::인간의 탐욕의 결과로 공동의 자원에 일어나는 일을 설명하기 위해 Garrett Hardin은 모든 가축 소유주들이 무료로 자신의 가축들을 방목할 수 있도록 허용되는 목초지의 예를 사용했다. 각각의 가축 소유주들은 자신의 이익을 극대화하기를 추구하며, 그렇게 함으로써, 가축을 한 마리 더 무리에 추가하는 것의 장단점을 고려한다. 장점은 가축 소유주가 추가되는 가축의 판매에서 나오는 이익 전체를 가진다는 것이다. 단점은 추가적인 방목은 목초지 악화의 원인이 된다는 것이다. 하지만 그 단점은 목초지를 사용하는 모든 가축 소유주들 사이에서 공유되기에, 개별 소유주는 단점의 불과 일부만을 겪게 된다. 결과적으로, 장점이 단점을 초과하게 되어있다. 그러므로 점점 더 많은 가축이 목초지로 몰려나와 결국 과도한 방목이 목초지를 완전히 망치게 되는 일은 피할 수 없다.
