Do animals use language to communicate? The answer to this question depends upon the definition of language. If language is viewed as any system of communication, the answer is "Yes." However, if we limit language to human linguistic knowledge and ability, the answer is "No."How do animals communicate? Many animals have some kind of signaling system for communication. For instance, spiders use a complex series of signals for mating. When the male spider approaches his female partner, he displays an elaborate series of gestures to tell her that he is indeed a spider, not an enemy. On the seashore, crabs communicate with one another by moving their claws. Crabs in a group have unique claw movements to recognize its members. The claw movement of one group is different from that of another. Each has different tempos, forms, and motions.

There are other animals whose languages show more advanced functions than those of spiders or crabs. Elephants are able to express a wide range of emotions using "elephant talk." They use a combination of sound and body movements to express various feelings. For instance, when they meet other elephants after a long while, they express their happiness by rushing towards each other with their heads high up while flapping their ears. Such communication strengthens the social bonds between elephants. Perhaps, honeybees have one of the most sophisticated communication systems among animals. When honeybees find food, they return to the hive and perform various forms of dancing to "tell" other bees where the source of food is located. The number of repetitions of these basic dancing patterns indicates the exact distance and location of the food source.

Is animal language as sophisticated as human language? Even though elephants and honeybees have a relatively advanced form of language among animals, their languages are still much more limited than human language in many ways. First of all, animals use their languages only for specific purposes or functions. Spiders use their language only for the purpose of mating and for nothing else. Honeybees use their language of dancing to indicate the distance and location of a food source. However, human language has no limit in the range of its purposes and topics. We use language to express our feelings, to state our opinions, to describe what we observe, and to do many other things. Furthermore, we can talk about anything: people, animals, things around us, and even something from our imagination. What we can do with our language is limitless. Second, animals have no creativity in using their languages. The male spider's gestures are always fixed, and he has no room for creativity in expressing himself. If he uses a different form of gesture, he is recognized as an enemy and can be eaten by his partner. Human language, on the other hand, shows no limit in its creativity. Even when we use language for the same purpose, we want to be creative in our expressions. Suppose you have just passed a difficult test. You can express your happiness in many different ways. Instead of simply saying "I'm so happy," you can say "I feel like I'm in heaven" or "I'm on top of the world."

Can animals learn human language? There have been efforts to train animals to see if they can acquire language skills at the level of humans. Parrots are well known for being able to imitate human speech sounds. When we say "Hello!" to them, they can talk back at us by repeating "Hello!" However, parrots can say only what is taught or what they hear. Some researchers once tried to train parrots to combine the words they have learned and produce sentences they have never heard. For instance, parrots were taught to say "I want a cracker." They also learned the word carrot. But they only repeated "I want a cracker" and "carrot" separately, unable to produce a sentence like "I want a carrot."On the contrary, children can easily say "I want a cracker" and "I want a carrot" after learning the words cracker and carrot. Furthermore, after they learn to use and, they can produce a complex sentence, "I want a cracker and a carrot." It is amazing to see children produce sentences creatively on their own as early as at the age of three or four.

A group of researchers attempted to teach a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky (named after the famous linguist Noam Chomsky) the American Sign Language. After going through hard training with her trainer, Nim Chimpsky was able to learn about 125 signs. Her signs were usually limited to two or three sign combinations, such as "PLAY ME NIM" or "GIVE ORANGE ME," and they were restricted to the topics of eating, drinking, and playing. Her signs were simply repetitions of signs made by her trainer. Children also repeat sentences uttered by adults especially in their early years. However, they become increasingly creative in their language use as they grow up. They start uttering sentences they have never made or heard before. Their utterances increase in length and complexity as time progresses. Children naturally acquire language and use it creatively for all kinds of purposes. No other animal on Earth has this kind of unlimited and creative ability in language use. Animals use their languages only for specific purposes with no creativity in expression. Human beings, in contrast, use language creatively for unlimited purposes to talk about anything. Our language ability truly distinguishes us from other animals.
