If the players, the coaches, the announcers, and the crowd all sound like they’re sitting midcourt, you may as well watch the game on television ―you’ll get just as much of a sense that you are there.
If we are weighed down by that worry, though, we won’t ever make progress.
In a paper, Kahneman and his colleagues outline a process for making big strategic decisions.
In both humans and birds, control of this specialized sound-system is exercised by one half of the brain, normally the left half, and the system is learned relatively early in life.
In the nineteenth century, the most respected health and medical experts all insisted that diseases were caused by miasma, a fancy term for bad air.
It has been suggested that Stone Age cave dwellers may have treated behavior disorders with a surgical method called trephining, in which part of the skull was chipped away to provide an opening through which the evil spirit could escape.
It isn’t uncommon among us economists to focus on one or two causal factors, exclude everything else, hoping that this will enable us to understand how just those aspects of reality work and interact.
I’m also running a political podcast, for example, and during the presidential conventions, we should be able to use it to do real-time interviews anywhere.
I’ve been a reporter for more than 25 years, so I have lived through a half dozen technological life cycles.
Leadership is not restricted to the influence exerted by someone in a particular position or role; followers are part of the leadership process, too.
Many leave their homes as they would on any given day never 2 to return.
Millions of pedestrians are non-fatally 4 injuring―some of whom are left with permanent disabilities.
Much of the time in the news business, we have no idea what we are doing.
Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman changed the way the world thinks about economics, upending the notion that human beings are rational decision-makers.
Now it is more like learning at the top of the hour and teaching at the bottom of the same hour.
Now, if you wanted to stay healthy, you could wash your hands, boil your water, cook your food thoroughly, and clean cuts and scrapes with iodine.
One aspect of leadership is particularly worth noting in this regard: Leadership is a social influence process shared among all members of a group.
One of the essential purposes of MAP is basically to _______ intuition, Kahneman said in a recent interview with The Post.
Over time, especially in the last century, social change shaped people’s views of followers, and leadership theories gradually recognized the active and important role that followers play in the leadership process.
People may have believed that when the evil spirit left, the person would return to his or her normal state.
Prehistoric societies some half a million years ago did not distinguish sharply between mental and physical disorders.
Riding a roller coaster can be a joy ride of emotions: the nervous anticipation as you’re strapped into your seat, the questioning and regret that comes as you go up, up, up, and the sheer adrenaline rush as the car takes that first dive.
She has married to her husband for more than two decades.
Single noises are only occasionally meaningful: mostly, the various speech sounds convey coherent messages only when combined into an overlapping chain, like different colors of ice-cream melting into one another.
Surprisingly, trephined skulls have been found to have healed over, indicating that some patients survived this extremely crude operation.
That means I am, with increasing frequency, making stuff up as I go along.
The famine caused another 1.25 million people to (B) ; many left their island home for the United States; the rest went to Canada, Australia, Chile, and other countries.
The modern economist does this by building models, which are deliberately stripped down representations of the phenomena out there.
The most dramatic transformations have come in the last half dozen years.
The same thinking can be applied to any number of goals, like improving performance at work.
The structured process calls for analyzing a decision based on six to seven previously chosen attributes, discussing each of them separately and assigning them a relative percentile score, and finally, using those scores to make a holistic judgment.
Their suggested approach, labeled as Mediating Assessments Protocol, or MAP, has a simple goal: To put off gut-based decision-making until a choice can be informed by a number of separate factors.
Then, almost overnight, people started realizing there were invisible things called microbes and bacteria that were the real cause of diseases.
There is a thought that can haunt us: since everything probably affects everything else, how can we ever make sense of the social world?
These daily updates were designed to help readers keep abreast of the markets as the government attempted to keep them under control.
These incidents cause much suffering and grief as well as economic hardship.
They are rapidly disappearing from the natural terrain of creeks, hills, and fields, and like their urban counterparts, are turning to their indoor, sedentary cyber toys for entertainment.
This is my number just in case you would like to call me.
This new view of disease brought sweeping changes to medicine, as surgeons adopted antiseptics and scientists invented vaccines and antibiotics.
Time does seem to slow to a trickle during a boring afternoon lecture and race when the brain is engrossed in something highly entertaining.
Today it seems natural to accept the important role followers play.
Today the technology to create the visual component of virtual-reality (VR) experiences is well on its way to becoming widely accessible and affordable.
We show up in the morning and someone says, Can you write a story about (pick one) tax policy/immigration/climate change?
Western society’s system of health was based on this assumption: to prevent diseases, windows were kept open or closed, depending on whether there was more miasma inside or outside the room; it was believed that doctors could not pass along disease because gentlemen did not inhabit quarters with bad air.
When newspapers had once-a-day deadlines, we said a reporter would learn in the morning and teach at night―write a story that could inform tomorrow’s readers on a topic the reporter knew nothing about 24 hours earlier.
Within this system of belief, called demonology, the victim was usually held at least partly responsible for the misfortune.

1 You use the products of our labour without paying us for it.

2 A few mixed-up letters, a couple of crumpled papers, and some help from Daddy later, he handed me his heart on the page.

3 A football game is comprised of exactly sixty minutes of play, a basketball game forty or forty-eight minutes, but baseball has no set length of time within which the game must be completed.

4 A good deal of the information stored in working memory is encoded in an auditory form, especially when the information is language based.

5 A love note is a piece of paper that is a little piece of your heart.

6 A single mammoth could feed, clothe, and supply a band for a long time.

7 A sleeping mother has the ability to identify the particular cry of her own baby.

8 A strategic vision has little value to the organization unless it's effectively communicated down the line to lower-level managers and employees.

9 A vibrant democracy conducted locally would then provide the active basic unit for the democratic life of the republic.

10 According to the underlying myth of modern science, this progression is always replacing the smaller knowledge of the past with the larger knowledge of the present, which will be replaced by the yet larger knowledge of the future.

11 Accordingly, the new society was entrusted with the task of monitoring music use, issuing licences to music users, negotiating fees, collecting fees and finally distributing the money raised to the composers and songwriters whose works were adding value to other people's businesses.

12 After an hour, my frustration reached its climax, when I saw a man riding a pony with a brand-new saddle.

13 After the meeting, one of the American executives said, I don't know why you had to apologize.

14 After the performance, the three refused to pay their bill, telling the owner of the café:.

15 Although we may think it, we can't really give someone our heart.

16 Amy tried not to look, but Laurie was making another funny face.

17 Amy was in the classroom staring out of the window beside her.

18 An engaging and convincing strategic vision has enormous motivational value ― for the same reason that a stone mason is inspired by building a great cathedral for the ages.

19 And fear can keep you from changing when you don't want to risk a step into unknown territory;.

20 As a result of the decision, these composers and others including music publishers founded a society to enforce and administer their performing rights.

21 As for At restaurants, 50% of the 18-29 year olds answer that it is acceptable to use cellphones while 26% of those 65 and older say the same.

22 As soon as the last letter of a sequence had been presented, participants in the study wrote down all six of the letters they had seen, guessing at any letters they couldn't easily recall.

23 As the nature of sarcasm implies a contradiction between intent and message, nonverbal cues may leak and reveal the speaker's true mood as they do in deception.

24 Baseball belongs to the kind of world in which people did not say, I haven't got all day.Baseball games do have all day to be played.

25 Baseball, like traditional life, proceeds according to the rhythm of nature, specifically the rotation of the Earth.

26 Bursting with happiness, I spent the rest of the day brushing my pony in the stable.

27 But by writing, we can give someone our heart on a page.

28 But it appears that in the arts there are no second chances.

29 But that does not mean that they can go on forever.

30 By returning to that music with a new or fresh perspective, perhaps as a result of listening to other music, we find something new and interesting.

31 Communicating the vision to organization members nearly always means putting where we are going and why in writing, distributing the statement organizationwide, and having executives personally explain the vision and its justification to as many people as possible.

32 Consumers facing such decisions consider not only the product's immediate consumption outcomes but also the product's general effect on society, including how the manufacturer behaves (e.g., toward the environment).

33 Direct involvement of citizens was what had made the American Revolution possible and given the new republic vitality and hope for the future.

34 During its first half century, games were not played at night, which meant that baseball games, like the traditional work day, ended when the sun set.

35 During the course of evolution she became programmed to awake only at the sound of her own particular baby.

36 Entry Submission ∙September 1st—30th on our website (www.watfordcc.org) The three best entries will be selected by the Watford volunteer group and will be made available online for voting to decide the winner.

37 Even if it is correct to say that we express and represent our thoughts in language, it may be a big mistake to suppose that there are structural similarities between what is doing the representing and what is represented.

38 Even so, research confirms the finding that nonverbal cues are more credible than verbal cues, especially when verbal and nonverbal cues conflict.

39 Eventually, he saw a need for the nation to be subdivided into wards ― political units so small that everyone living there could participate directly in the political process.

40 Everyone knows about the computer crash and your assistant's illness.Harumi responded that he thought that the apology would be a good introduction to his presentation.

41 For example, in an early study by Conrad, adults were shown six-letter sequences, with letters being presented visually, one at a time, at intervals of three-fourths of a second.

42 For example, some people choose not to leave an unfulfilling job or a failing relationship because they fear the unknown more than the known.

43 For example, the letter F was remembered as the auditorially similar letter S 131 times but as the visually similar letter P only 14 times.

44 For instance, deciding whether to spend Saturday afternoon relaxing with your family or exercising will be determined by the relative importance that you place on family versus health.

45 For optimum health, people should be encouraged to take control to a point but to recognize when further control is impossible.

46 From an evolutionary perspective, fear has contributed to both fostering and limiting change, and to preserving the species.

47 Furthermore, it is the behaviour of some tourists, and the structure and development of tourism itself, that often generate negative attitudes within the host community.

48 Given the methodologies of science, the law of gravity and the genome were bound to be discovered by somebody; the identity of the discoverer is incidental to the fact.

49 Governments, for example, can and often do employ awareness campaigns among the resident population to promote a welcoming attitude towards visitors, in order to foster a positive market image.

50 Harumi Tanaka, from Osaka, Japan, had accepted an assignment in Boston.

51 Harumi agreed on a Monday to present a business plan the following Friday.

52 He also said, Lennie, someday you'll have a pony of your own. However, some day is a pain to a boy who lives in and knows only now.

53 He began his presentation, I'm sorry that I am not well prepared.

54 He had been invited by one company to spend a month there and had been assigned an office and a research assistant.

55 He is a big fan of the Red Sox, and this trip would make a great surprise gift for his birthday.

56 He was prescient in understanding the dangers of concentrated power, whether in corporations or in political leaders or exclusionary political institutions.

57 He went on saying, I should have been here at 7.

58 His task was to explore the possibility of developing joint ventures with American firms.
