Crime
Crimes against the people of America need to be reduced. The Crime Prevention Coalition has named this year's theme "Safer Communities, Brighter Futures." They believe that what really drives crime from our streets is everyone helping each other.
By helping each other, crime has been reduced in those areas where entire neighborhoods are involved. Building trust among neighbors has helped keep the crime figures low in those communities.
The facts concerning crime in America have changed. Violent crime has gone down since last year. Property crime has also decreased. The number of young people getting arrested for violent crimes has gone up. More young people have been victims of violent crimes too.
Children in America have also suffered. More parents have been charged with abusing their children. A number of young girls have reported to have been beaten by boyfriends.
Although many different crimes are being stopped, many more are still happening. People who live in a community with crime can make a difference. They can get involved with reducing the crime in their neighborhood. By working together, neighbors can make a safe neighborhood.

The Twitter World Cup
The Twitter World Cup
It was a Wednesday afternoon about 15 months ago. I was at my desk at the BBC's Television Centre, preparing to go and grab a sandwich for lunch, when a colleague came up to me and asked if I had plans for the next hour.
I didn't know it at the time but my life was about to change forever - well, actually that's a slight exaggeration but I'm trying to build up some drama here!
My colleague told me that he was going to a BBC seminar about Twitter but didn't want to go alone. "Come along," he said "Twitter is the future."
I'm sure that I just stared back at him blankly. I hardly knew what Twitter was - it is a social networking site - and a sandwich would have been a much more appealing prospect at the time. Anyway, we reached a compromise. I would go to the Twitter seminar as long as we could stop off for a sandwich on the way..
Looking back on it, I'm not really sure why I agreed to go to the seminar. I think it must have been a very dull day in the office. It certainly wasn't because of any great fascination with Twitter. I knew only one fact about it - that it was the forum on which information about the Hudson River plane crash first surfaced.

The seminar was intriguing. It was clear that here was a form of communication that was completely different to anything I'd used before. That afternoon I opened a Twittter account. The rest, as they say, is history.
I was initially cautious. As a broadcaster who is used to rabbiting on for ages, I was always going to find it difficult to condense my thoughts into 140 characters. But my appreciation for what Twitter can provide has grown to such an extent over the past 15 months that I now class it as an essential tool of my trade.
In my view, the list of stars at this World Cup - which already boasts Mesut Ozil, Ghana, vuvuzelas etc - should also include Twitter. This has in many ways been the Twitter World Cup. Let me explain why.
I arrived in South Africa on 1 June - the day of the England squad announcement. I'd been sent ahead to report on the team's arrival at their Rustenburg base, while some of my colleagues remained in London to cover Capello's 23-man selection.
Once I touched down in Johannesburg, I was, like so many other people, eager to find out who was in and who was out. The problem was that Capello had told his players but the Football Association had decided to delay any announcement until later in the day.
That's when Twitter came into play. When the players found out, they naturally told family and friends, who started tweeting.
In the end, the FA's announcement was almost irrelevant because anybody using Twitter had known the names of everybody in the squad at least an hour earlier. The England squad announcement was basically made via Twitter.
Time and time again over the past few weeks I've relied on Twitter for information. Those of you who use Twitter will know that the England team was revealed by footballer-turned-radio presenter Stan Collymore before every match.
The former England striker had an indiscreet contact in the England camp. Within minutes of the players being told who had been picked, Collymore was announcing Capello's selection to the world.
Of course, there are downsides to Twitter, too. You have to be careful with the source of information. Rumours can spread quickly. On the day of France's first match, Twitter was full of false gossip about Thierry Henry.
One of the problems with Twitter is that information spreads so fast that inaccuracies can soon spread out of control.
The England players were banned from tweeting during the tournament but once Rio Ferdinand had returned home after his World Cup was ended before it began by injury he was soon on Twitter.
It did not take long for England team news to leak out via Tweitter. Photo: Reuters
It will be interesting to see what Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has to say about Twitter when the Premier League season begins but currently anybody who wants to interact with the England captain can.
It's the interactivity that, for me, has made Twitter so useful. Yes, it's great to be able to find out information so quickly - and to pass it on as well - but it's also such a good barometer of public opinion.
When you're reporting on a World Cup as a journalist, it's actually very easy to misread the mood of the public back home. We are very cut off out here. We go to the team press conferences every day but that is a controlled environment. We don't have the chance to sit in a pub and chew the fat with fans.
Twitter has given me a far better ability to gauge what people have been thinking back home. Before Capello's final press conference in South Africa, I tweeted a message asking England fans to tell me what they'd like the journalists to ask the coach. Within minutes I'd had about a hundred replies.
Twitter has given you, the viewer or reader, the opportunity to tell me, the journalist, what you're thinking. Now, that doesn't mean that I have to listen to everything that I'm told - I do have my own mind as well - but it has to be healthy for that dialogue to exist.
I know from many of the messages that I've received that Twitter has given some of you who aren't in South Africa the opportunity to feel far more closely connected with this tournament than previous ones.
Whether you're following Ferdinand, or Kaka or maybe Motty, you're able to monitor their movements and their opinions. If you don't like what they say then you can message them directly.
Reporting on a World Cup is a privilege. Those lucky enough to be sent to South Africa have been on a fascinating journey. We've all had experiences that we'd like to share.
If Twitter helps you feel more involved, gives you the sense that we're taking you with us on that journey, then, in my view, it has to be an asset for any major sporting event

Mosquitoes Are Coming
People of California are being warned about a virus. This virus can be spread by mosquitoes. It is called West Nile virus.
A man who is a State Public Health officer said that people should be careful. Because of the warm weather mosquitoes are breeding earlier that normal. No one can tell how bad West Nile virus might be this season. People should try to protect themselves from mosquito bites. All standing water should be cleared so mosquitoes can not breed. Also, insect repellent with DEET should be worn when outside.
It is also a good idea to stay inside during dawn and dusk. Mosquitoes are most active at this time. If someone must go outside they should wear long-sleeve shirts and pants.
No human cases of West Nile virus have been found yet in 2007. There have been areas that the virus has been found however. They are trying to reduce the number of mosquito breeding pools there.
Most people do not usually get extremely sick from the virus. They may get flu-like symptoms like fever, head and body aches. Sometimes it can be very serious. A person may contract encephalitis.
The first case of West Nile virus found in the United States was in 1999.

Alzheimer's Disease
-
Diseases can cause many problems. Alzheimer's disease makes people have problems with their thinking. Even easy tasks are hard to do.
A German doctor discovered the disease in 1907. Back then, it was considered a rare disease. Today, it is known to be more common.
Alzheimer's disease attacks the brain. It slowly destroys a person's memory. It changes their thinking and the way they act. About 4 million American adults have this disease.
At times, a person with this disease can become confused. They can have a hard time trying to talk. Sometimes they forget where they are. Sometimes they do not remember their own family. Eventually, people who have this disease can no longer take care of themselves.
Alzheimer's disease cannot be cured, but it can get better with treatment. It is important to see a special doctor if you have this disease.

Korean Park Ji-sung expected to start for United
May 27, 2009 | |
One of the biggest matches on the football calendar is just a day away, and Park Ji-sung of Manchester United can make a name for himself by becoming the first Asian to play in the Champions League final match. Park was left off Manchester’s lineup in last season’s final against Chelsea, with Owen Hargreaves getting the start at right wing. But, according to most media outlets, the Korean is a shoe-in to crack the starting lineup in tomorrow’s big match. “When I was left off the lineup in last season’s final, to be honest, I was very disappointed,” Park said. “It was a different type of pain than what I felt during my two knee operations. That’s because the Champions League final match is a stage we all dream of playing on. This season has been my best season to date. We repeated as the Premier League champions and completed the season healthy.” Park is optimistic about his chances this time around. “I want to play but I can’t be sure until the manager releases the lineup on the day of the final,” he said. “If I do get the start, I will give it my all. I want to show my absolute best.” Pitted against the talented forwards and midfielders of Barcelona, Park will be expected to play a significant role on defense. Park is confident that both he and his team will live up to the challenge. “Our solid defense and teamwork will prevent Barcelona from playing to their full capability,” he said. “This is why I am sure we will earn a victory over Barcelona. They have many excellent players. But [Lionel] Messi has been the best player for them this season. If I get the chance, I will focus on stopping Messi,” he added. |

Let freedom ring
Deep within the heart has always known that there was freedom
Somehow breathed into the very soul alive
The prisoner, the powerless, the slave have always known it
There‘s something that keeps reaching for the sky
‘계속 하늘에 이르고자 하는 무언가가 있다’(는 것을)
Even life begins because a baby fights for freedom
And songs we love to sing have freedom‘s theme
Some have walked through fire and flood to find a place of freedom
And some faced hell itself for freedom‘s dream
Let freedom ring wherever minds know what it means to be in chains
Let freedom ring wherever hearts know pain
Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key
We can be free and we can sing --- let freedom ring
God built freedom into every fiber of creation
And He meant for us to all be free and whole
When my Lord bought freedom with the blood of His redemption
His cross stamped pardon on my very soul
I‘ll sing it out with every breath, I’ll let the whole world hear it
This hallelujah anthem of the free
That iron bars and heavy chains can never hold us captive
The Son has made us free and free indeed
Let freedom ring down through the ages from a hill called Calvary
Let freedom ring wherever hearts know pain
Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key
You can be free and you can sing let freedom ring
Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key
You can be free and you can sing let freedom ring
You can be free and you can sing --- let freedom ring --- let freedom ring

On January 20, Barack Obama claimed his place in history as America’s first black president before a jubilant crowd of more than a million in Washington D.C. The presidency passed to Obama from George W. Bush at noon and Obama thanked Bush for his service as president. It was an extraordinary day in the life of America and a day of high spirits. People of all colors and ages welcomed the new president with new hopes and wishes. Change has finally come to America! Wearing a navy suit and red tie, the 44th U.S. president repeated the oath of office, putting his hand on the same Bible used by President Abraham Lincoln. On the inaugural parade route, Obama and his wife Michelle walked a few blocks, waving to cheering crowds under the watchful eyes of security agents. “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin again the work of remaking America,” Obama said in his inaugural address. “We gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. We will overcome our serious economic and international challenges. We are ready to lead once more.” His inspirational inaugural address only briefly mentioned a series of pledges from his presidential campaign: to get the U.S. out of Iraq, stabilize Afghanistan, create jobs, boost the use of alternative energy, address climate change, transform schools, manage government spending wisely and oversee a more bipartisan, and less-divisive approach to policy-making. As Obama took office in a time of economic crisis, with some 11 million people now out of work, he said he will focus his energy on reviving the economy. He placed blame for the recent economic collapse not just on greed and irresponsibility on the part of some but also on the inability or unwillingness of everyone to move the country beyond an industrial-based economy. “What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly,” Obama said. His entrance to the White House was cheered all around the world as a sign that America will be more embracing and more open to change. “With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come,” Obama said. |
