In the popular movie Good Will Hunting, a janitor working at MIT, one of the best universities in America, solves a complicated math problem that was written on a board by a professor.

"He went on to explain that it is also the sum of the cubes of 1 and 12, as well as the first number that can be divided by the sum of the cubes of two different numbers.

As a vegetarian, Ramanujan had trouble getting the proper nutrition due to the lack of food during World War I, and it was not long before he had health problems.

After inquiring about Ramanujan's poor health, Hardy casually mentioned that his taxi's number had been 1729, a number with no special meaning.

Upon further inspection, however, Hardy realized that it was a version of the Riemann zeta function, an extremely complex mathematical concept.

But he came across an old math book and from this basic text he was able to discover theories that had confused mathematicians for years.

He took an accounting job to earn money and began to have some of his work published in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society.

He mailed them to a professor at Cambridge, who immediately recognized the brilliance in his work and brought Ramanujan to England.

I have made a special investigation of divergent series, and the results I have are termed by the local mathematicians as "amazing.

I have not gone through the conventional regular course which is followed in a university, but I am seeking a new path for myself.

Lambeau: They worked together for the remainder of their lives, producing some of the most exciting math theories ever written.

He received a degree in mathematics from Cambridge and became a Fellow of the Royal Society, only the second Indian to do so.

He was a young, uneducated man from India who turned out to be one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.

Ramanujan's detailed understanding of the complicated ideas in this book provided the first hint of his true genius.

Hardy had never seen anything like it before, and quickly concluded that he was dealing with a mathematical genius.

"What caught Hardy's attention was a mathematical formula in the letter that didn't seem to make sense at first.

There is one story about a conversation that took place when Hardy was visiting Ramanujan in the hospital.

Perhaps one day you'll have a mentor who will recognize your hidden abilities and help you develop them.

In 1919, he returned to India to recover his health, but passed away soon afterwards at the age of 32.

Although he was unable to finish his university education, he didn't lose his passion for mathematics.

His work is still widely used today in statistical dynamics, computer science, and code breaking.

He was given a full scholarship to a university, but spent all of his time studying mathematics.

Because he neglected his other classes, his scholarship was not extended for the following year.

Dear Sir, I have had no university education but I have undergone the ordinary school course.

Since leaving school, I have been using the spare time at my disposal to work at mathematics.

Despite dying young, Srinivasa Ramanujan had an enormous impact on the world of mathematics.

Although his family was of high caste, they didn't have enough money to send him to school.

Everyone has a special gift, but many people live and die without ever discovering theirs.

Although Good Will Hunting is a fictional film, Srinivasa Ramanujan was a real person.

Although the two men had very different personalities, they worked well together.

You may feel like you don't have one, but it just means you haven't found it yet.

Under Hardy's guidance, Ramanujan's genius was finally allowed to fully develop.

Yet, had it not been for GH, Hardy, his genius might never have been recognized.

When he was 15, he read a book that was a collection of mathematical theorems.

Ramanujan was born into a poor family living near the city of Madras in 1887.

In the following scene, he explains the situation to another professor, Sean.

Ramanujan was a genius with a mind that worked more mathematically than most.

The professor, Gerald Lambeau, realizes that Will has a very special talent.

Hardy, an honored 35-year-old mathematician at the University of Cambridge.

Hardy invited Ramanujan to come to England, where they could work together.

But he's very defensive and I need someone who can get through to him.

Over the next five years, Hardy served as Ramanujan's personal mentor.

The janitor, Will Hunting, had been studying mathematics on his own.

Sean: Where he suffered from pneumonia and died at a young age.

Have you ever met someone who saw something special in you?

After thinking for a moment, however, Ramanujan disagreed.

Lambeau: So this Ramanujan lived in a tiny hut in India.

Despite this, he began to study mathematics on his own.

Lambeau: Have you ever heard of a man named Ramanujan?

In it, he introduced himself and described his work.

Hardy was so stunned that he could not even reply.

"No," he said, "the number 1729 is very special.

No formal education, no access to other works.

Encouraged, Ramanujan wrote a letter to GH.

Ramanujan's genius was unparalleled, Sean.

It is the sun of the cubes of 9 and 10.

Sean: And he mailed them to Hardy.

Sean: (nodding his head) Yeah.

Lambeau: That's right, Sean.

This boy is like that.

Last year, he decided to try a personal experiment: for one year he would produce as little trash as possible, stop using fossil fuel, and buy nothing except food that had been grown within 400 kilometers of his home.

I just hope other people can learn from our mistakes and find their own ways to live more environmentally friendly lives!

I guess we're going to have to borrow a picnic cooler from my father and fill it up with ice from a neighbor's freezer.

This might not seem difficult in the countryside, but it's a real challenge when you live in the middle of a big city!

When we first started this experiment, we had lots of arguments about simple tasks that had suddenly become difficult.

We had to find another way to cool our home because we decided to cut off the electricity to reduce our energy use.

It's clear that by reducing your impact on the environment, you help yourself just as much as you help the world.

By always using the stairs and walking everywhere, we've gotten into shape without ever setting foot in a gym.

In order for me to drink my pineapple juice, the fruit had to be flown hundreds of kilometers in an airplane.

She was very supportive and said we could bring our own bottles rather than using the cafe's paper cups.

Originally, we thought that not having lights would be the hardest part of living without electricity.

We tried keeping the windows open, but our apartment was soon filled with hungry mosquitoes.

Then it occurred to me that most of the fruit at the cafe was grown in tropical countries.

My wife and I talk more often, and both of us are spending more quality time with our son.

We now know that it's possible to live a calm and peaceful life in the middle of the city.

For one year, we're going to attempt to stop having a negative impact on the environment.

Luckily, one of our neighbors came to our rescue and let us use her old window screens.

Sadly, I realized that I won't be drinking any pineapple juice for the next 12 months!

My name is Christopher, and I live in Chicago with my wife and our two-year-old son.

To solve this problem, I made my own food rule: I would buy only locally grown food.

It's a small pot placed inside a larger one, with a layer of wet sand between them.

We thought we had found the solution when we read about the "pot in a pot" device.

There's a cafe around the corner where my wife and I often go to get fresh juice.

The experiment has barely begun, and already I'm wondering if it's impossible.

Now it meant an extra 20 minutes on foot before making  the long walk to work.

Our family now spends more time together, and we're all happier because of it.

All you have to do is stop rushing around, eating junk food, and watching TV.

We've even become close friends with some neighbors we hardly knew before.

Our first step will be figuring out the best ways to stop creating trash.

Christopher York is a writer who often blogs about environmental issues.

I know it won't be easy, but I feel that this is a very important issue.

For example, who would take our son to his day care center each morning?

We quickly realized that we can't buy anything that comes in a package.

Before we started this experiment, both of us were slightly overweight.

Unfortunately, the "pot in a pot" didn't keep our milk from spoiling.

Being part of a community certainly makes low-impact living easier.

All of our milk and vegetables kept going bad in just a day or two.

In just a couple of days, our fresh milk turned into smelly cheese.

But we found that we actually enjoyed doing things by candlelight.

The summer heat has begun and we really miss our air conditioner.

My wife now says that her daily walk is the best part of her day.

After that, we're going to take a close look at the food we buy.

Before, this had just required spending a few minutes in a taxi.

Finally, we'll look for sustainable ways to reduce energy use.

Apparently, people use these to store food in parts of Africa.

As a busy working mother, she values having some time alone.

Our priority today was finding ways to stop creating trash.

I explained our experiment to the woman behind the counter.

Not having a TV has really strengthened our relationships.

I'm not an expert and I don't expect to be a role model.

Not having a refrigerator, however, was a real problem.

We can't even order a coffee to go in a paper cup.

Most of these things have worked out smoothly.

He kept a record of his efforts on his blog.

Airplanes, of course, use fossil fuel.

What did we learn from our experiment?

Even our health has improved.

Welcome to my blog!

Perhaps it seems like you're unable to use your free time the way you want because your friends or classmates pressure you into following their plans.

People who are constantly assertive actually have fewer conflicts in life because other people understand exactly who they are and how they feel.

Terms - Finally, after discussing the problem and how to solve it, decide on the terms of an agreement that will satisfy both of you.

[The Benefits of Being Assertive] Being assertive is simply a respectful way of letting other people know about your feelings.

Remember, being assertive will help you avoid unnecessary problems or stress caused by relationships with people in your life.

Assertiveness skills can not only help you deal with a problem, but they can also help reduce the amount of stress you feel.

Response - Describe the type of response you expect from the person and how it would help solve the problem.

In these types of situations, you can use assertiveness skills to stand up for yourself in a positive way.

Following the ASSERT formula may feel a bit awkward at first, but over time it will become second nature.

Assertiveness enables you to act in your own best interest, and stand up for yourself without anxiety.

By being assertive and making your needs clear, you will gain the respect and understanding of others.

Attention - To deal with people who are causing you problems, you first have to get their attention.

Approach them in a respectful way and let them know that you need to talk about something important.

For example, you might think that your parents and teachers have too much control over your life.

Assertive people, on the other hand, respect others and pay close attention to their feelings.

Speak about the particular thing that is causing you to feel upset, uncomfortable or unhappy.

So if you want to start having a happier social and family life, try being more assertive!

Soon, Simple, Short - When a problem occurs, deal with the situation as soon as possible.

But even when you don't, you'll feel better after having honestly explained how you feel.

And when you talk about the problem, be sure to keep your explanation simple and short.

[Assertiveness Quiz] 1 When someone treats you badly, do you talk to him/her about it?

6 When a friend wants you to do something you're not comfortable with, can you say no?

This improves their relationships, reduces stress, and can even make them healthier.

If you answered "no" to most of the questions above, you need to be more assertive.

3 When someone sends you a nasty text message, do you talk to the person about it?

Sometimes it can be hard to keep a level head when someone is treating you badly.

4 When you're waiting in line and someone cuts in front of you, do you speak up?

10 Can you resolve conflicts with others without getting angry and aggressive?

Sometimes, I feel like I'm pushed into doing what other people want me to do.

When sharing your feelings, you must be careful not to hurt or insult others.

Effect - Make sure they understand the effect the situation is having on you.

9 Can you tell your friends the truth about what you think and who you are?

However, there are certain responsibilities that come with being assertive.

5 Do you confront someone who is trying to embarrass or speak ill of you?

Specific - When describing the problem, focus only on the problem itself.

Our relationships with other people can sometimes cause a lot of stress.

7 Can you discuss family rules, like curfews or chores, without arguing?

Otherwise, you'll just be causing yourself a lot of unnecessary stress.

Aggressive people are not respectful and can easily drive others away.

But now I'm starting to speak up and explain what I want - Kevin, 19.

What's important is knowing how to solve those problems - Maria, 18.

Here are some questions to check how well you express your opinions.

Of course, you won't always be able to get exactly what you want.

2 When you know a friend is lying to you, do you say something?

In both of these situations, the ASSERT formula can be helpful.

8 If someone is bullying you at school, do you tell a teacher?

You might suddenly feel angry and want to scream and shout.

It's a simple formula, but it can have a powerful effect.

They try to make all of my decisions for me - Jason, 17.

Explain exactly how their behavior is making you feel.

You can't always avoid problems with other people.

Don't confuse assertiveness with aggressiveness.

Or you might feel afraid and unable to speak up.

My parents don't trust me enough.

Answer? Drag it!The extraordinary expansion of food production by aquafarming has come with high costs to the environment and human health.

Answer? Drag it!As with industrialized agriculture, most commercial aquafarming relies on high energy and chemical inputs, including antibiotics and artificial feeds made from the wastes of poultry processing.

Answer? Drag it!Such production practices tend to concentrate toxins in farmed fish, creating a potential health threat to consumers.

Answer? Drag it!The discharge from fish farms, which can be equivalent to the sewage from a small city, can pollute nearby natural aquatic ecosystems.

Answer? Drag it!Around the tropics, especially tropical Asia, the expansion of commercial shrimp farms is contributing to the loss of highly biodiverse coastal mangrove forests.

Answer? Drag it!Anne Mangen at the University of Oslo studied the performance of 1 readers of a computer screen compared to readers of paper.

Answer? Drag it!Her investigation indicated that reading on a computer screen involves various strategies from browsing to simple word detection.

Answer? Drag it!Those different strategies together lead to 2 poorer reading comprehension in contrast to reading the same texts on paper.

Answer? Drag it!Moreover, there is an additional feature of the screen: hypertext.

Answer? Drag it!Above all, a hypertext connection is not one that you have made yourself, and it will not necessarily have a place in your own unique conceptual framework.

Answer? Drag it!Therefore, it may not help you understand and digest what you're reading at your own appropriate pace, and it may even distract you.

Answer? Drag it!Without appropriate emotions—including some caring by each side for the welfare of the other—it may be impossible for people to resolve important conflicts.

Answer? Drag it!If your spouse is feeling ignored and unappreciated, an affable, "Do whatever you want, dear," may only make things worse.

Answer? Drag it!An exclusive reliance on cold rationality as a means of understanding the world denies us access to important realms of human experience, without which we may be unable to deal with a difference effectively.

Answer? Drag it!Emotions give us clues about how we are being treated and what we need.

Answer? Drag it!An ignored and unappreciated husband may be less in need of an explanation of why he feels that way than of a weekend with his wife away from work and children.

Answer? Drag it!A professor had students craft poetry-generating programs.

Answer? Drag it!The children would feed the program verbs, adjectives, and nouns, and the computer would combine them into lines of poetry: "MAD WOLF HATES BECAUSE INSANE WOLF SKIPS" or "UGLY MAN LOVES BECAUSE UGLY DOG HATES."

Answer? Drag it!The process of trying to get the program to work lent students startling insights into language.

Answer? Drag it!Jenny, a thirteen-year-old girl who had previously earned only mediocre grades, came in one day and announced, "Now I know why we have nouns and verbs."

Answer? Drag it!She'd been taught grammar and the parts of speech for years without understanding them.

Answer? Drag it!But as Jenny struggled to get the program to work, she realized she had to classify words into categories—all the verbs in one bucket, all the nouns in another—or else the sentences the computer spat out wouldn't make sense.

Answer? Drag it!Grammar suddenly became deeply meaningful.

Answer? Drag it!This produced another effect: Jenny began getting A's in her language classes.
